Technical writing internships
Hi Folks,
Nice to see such an active Blog on technical writing on this part of the world! I joined the group a few minutes back and would like to know your views on a topic.
Do any you know about companies that give internships to aspiring technical writers?
I have been getting requests for internships from communication students who are eager to enter technical writing. Since we don't have any university-level courses on technical writing, I think it becomes our responsibility to help the aspirants enter the field because we face a dearth of good, trained talents in the field to meet the amazing number of openings.
Communication students in universities study different aspects of mass communication and forms of writing as part of their course, which makes them capable of starting a career in this field, but a person needs to know processes like SDLC, authoring tools and some amount of hands-on experience to start a career. Can't we help them with such opportunities?
An internship won't cost your company anything, but it will get the assistance of a trained communicator for a period of two months or so, which can be made mutually beneficial. If your company is in the lookout of trained talent, such a tenure can give your company a prospective employee who will be readily productive from the very first day. If not, you will be helping a person build a career while utilizing his/her services for a specified period of time.
Let's discuss this topic if it is of interest to you.
Thanks,
Subash

Gurudutt Kamath is organising chat sessions for tech writers to interact with experts. I personally think its a brilliant initiative. A great way to network and share knowledge with tech writers beyond the city you live in.
More details can be found here. I also recommend you to subscribe to his

SourceSafe for non-software developers
The Creative Tech Writer has an interesting take on SourceSafe.
He She believes it may not be the right choice for tech writers. Here's what
he she has to say ...."
Nice little article about how Microsoft's Visual SourceSafe is supposed to work and, indirectly, how it doesn't necessarily work for non-software developers, such as technical writers."
Click here to continue reading his her views. ( via
The Creative Tech Writer )
P.S :
Guy Haas mentions an interesting observation that majority of tech writers in the US are female. In India, I've noticed that male tech writers outnumber their female counterparts.
